当代世界情况远比过去复杂,经过现代主义对西欧和美国文化的大开放,英诗似乎又开始内向,写身边琐事,写心头烦闷,但现在已有迹象,它在增强历史感,响应外来的呼声。 一个相联而难决的问题是诗歌语言。诗人使用语言最精又最大胆,而对眼前的语言情况经常不满意。英国历来就有对“诗歌用语”的争论,从浪漫派起更为尖锐。华兹华斯要求以“人们真正用的语言”入诗。济慈从弥尔顿式的倒装句法转向纯净的北方英语。现代派艾略特依靠美国口语诗传统,要求“纯净部落的方言”。苏格兰的麦克迪尔米德追求“一种能尽各种功用的语言,它有一种奇妙的透彻,又有火光样的品质。”更近的东尼·哈里逊也要“吞下父亲们的火一样的语言”,用它去“点燃多少代压抑着的沉默”,并说即使他的声带被烤焦,“也将有火焰不断地唱歌”,这是把诗歌语言同为受剥削的“哑巴”们仗义执言的责任联系起来了。可见问题不仅是文言白话之分,白话也不仅有舞台式与街头式之别,而还有阶级问题、意识形态问题。多数英国诗人当然是不管这一套的,但他们也每天面临选择什么样的语言的问题。争论的好处之一是英国的诗歌语言没有长期停滞过,不仅平时是流动的,而且每逢一个大的诗歌运动,总以刷新诗歌语言为其前奏。 以后的情况将如何? Fingal O’Flahertie Wills Wilde)。他的父亲威廉姆·王尔德爵士是一个外科医生,他的母亲是一位詩人與作家。王尔德是一个优秀的学生,他获得了都柏林圣三一学院(Trinity College)的奖学金,1874年,他进入牛津大学迈格德林学院(Magdalen College)学习。在牛津,王尔德受到了沃尔特·佩特及约翰·拉斯金的审美影响,并接触了新黑格尔派哲学、达尔文进化论和先拉斐尔派的作品,这为他之后成为唯美主义先锋作家确立了方向。当时,虽然年轻的王尔德还没有获得一个文学奖项,但服装惹眼、谈吐机智、特立独行的他在社会上已经小有名气,一些杂志甚至刊登着讽刺他的文章。 1882年,王尔德在美国作了一个精彩的巡回讲座,两年后他與 Constance Lloyd 成婚,兩名兒子 Cyril 與 Vyvyan 亦分別在1885年與1886年出生。1887年王尔德成为一家妇女杂志的執行總编辑,那上面发表着他的一些小说、评论和诗。王尔德的作品以其词藻华美、立意新颖和观点鲜明闻名,他的第一本小说道林·格雷的画像发表于1891年,之后他又发表了散文《社会主义下人的灵魂》,这两部作品都十分成功,但真正为王尔德赢得名誉的是他的戏剧作品。可以说他的每一部戏剧作品都受着热烈的欢迎,有一个时期,伦敦的舞台上竟同时上演着他的三部作品。 维多利亚女王时代的英国上流社会市侩腐朽,新旧风尚的冲突激烈,王尔德的自由作风和大胆的政治作风很快使他成为了这场冲突的牺牲品。1895年,昆斯拜瑞侯爵(Marquess of Queensberry)因儿子阿尔弗瑞德·道格拉斯(Lord Alfred 'Bosie' Douglas)與王爾德交往而令到父子不和,并公然斥责王尔德是一个 \"somdomite\"。对此,愤怒的阿尔弗瑞德叫王尔德立刻上诉告侯爵败坏他的名誉,可惜王爾德不但上诉失败,更被反告曾“commit acts of gross indecency”。根据当时英国苛刻的刑事法,王尔德被判有罪,在瑞丁和本顿维尔监狱服了两年苦役。这两年,王尔德停止了戏剧创作,而构思了诗作《瑞丁监狱之歌》和忏悔录《深渊书简》,在这两部作品中已很难寻得唯美主义的影响。在王爾德服刑期間,Constance 與兩個孩子改姓為 Holland 兼移居意大利,而他大多数的朋友则对他避之唯恐不及,当中只有寥寥數人如戏剧作家萧伯纳仍挺身维护他。 1897年获释后,王爾德立刻动身前往巴黎,对于英国他失望透顶,不再有丝毫留恋。其後他為了兩名孩子曾嘗試與 Constance 復合,但阿尔弗瑞德亦同時表示想與王爾德重歸如好,最後王爾德放棄兩名孩子而選擇了阿尔弗瑞德。王爾德在以假名居住法国期间完成并出版了《瑞丁监狱之歌》,之后與阿尔弗瑞德同游意大利,但幾個月後,兩人再次分手。1900年王爾德終於在好友 Robert 'Robbie' Ross 捷克小说家,生于捷克布尔诺市。父亲为钢琴家、音乐艺术学院的教授。生长于一个小国在他看来实在是一种优势,因为身处小国,“要么做一个可怜的、眼光狭窄的人”,要么成为一个广闻博识的“世界性的人”。童年时代,他便学过作曲,受过良好的音乐熏陶和教育。少年时代,开始广泛阅读世界文艺名著。青年时代,写过诗和剧本,画过画,搞过音乐并从事过电影教学。总之,用他自己的话说,“我曾在艺术领域里四处摸索,试图找到我的方向。”50年代初,他作为诗人登上文坛,出版过《人,一 座广阔的花园》(1953)、《独白》(1957)以及《最后一个五月》等诗集。但诗歌创作显然不是他的长远追求。最后,当他在30岁左右写出第一个短篇小说后,他确信找到了自己的方向,从此走上了小说创作之路。 1967年,他的第一部长篇小说《玩笑》在捷克出版,获得巨大成功,连出三版,印数惊人,每次都在几天内售罄。作者在捷克当代文坛上的重要地位从此确定。但好景不长。1968年,苏联入侵捷克后,《玩笑》被列为禁书。昆德拉失去了在电影学院的职务。他的文学创作难以进行。在此情形下,他携妻子于1975年离开捷克,来到法国。 移居法国后,他很快便成为法国读者最喜爱的外国作家之一。他的绝大多数作品,如《笑忘录》(1978)、《不能承受的存在之轻》(1984)、《不朽》(1990)等等都是首先在法国走红,然后才引起世界文坛的瞩目。他曾多次获得国际文学奖,并多次被提名为诺贝尔文学奖的候选人。 除小说外,昆德拉还出版过三本论述小说艺术的文集,其中《小说的艺术》(1986)以及《被叛卖的遗嘱》(1993)在世界各地流传甚广。
